Bonded Abrasives, or man-made stones, are popular for their faster cutting properties. They are excellent for users who need to produce a quick sharp edge and/or re-shape an edge.

Silicon Carbide and Aluminum Oxide stones are available in coarser grades than Natural Arkansas Novaculite stone. If your edge is dull, nicked or damaged, you may want to start with an Silicon Carbide or Aluminum Oxide stone. These stones are best used to shape or repair your edge. Dan's then recommends using a Natural Arkansas Novaculite stone if you want a finer finish to your edge.

Silicon Carbide stones are commonly used with a lubricating oil, while most Aluminum Oxide stones are oil-filled. Using a honing oil will lessen the tendency of metal particles to cover the stone surface and keep the stone free cutting. All stones should be cleaned by rubbing a liberal amount of honing oil on the surface and then wiping the stone with a clean cloth.
